:Exhibition:
My piece McPride is a pop art piece criticizing corporation's participation in rainbow capitalism, which put simply is when a business shows the most basic support for lgbtq people during the month of June and displays the most 'sanitized', 'safe' version of queer people possible on tv to appear progressive and sell more product without upsetting conservative consumers too much. This is a 'what if', what would it look like if a corporation actually cared about representing the queer community. Title: McPride Size: 12' x 8.5' Medium: digital Date of Completion: 2022 |
Inspiration
French Girl Sweet Friends by Romero Britto (left) and Night Out by Romero Britto (right) are my pieces of inspiration. Romero Britto has a very unique and recognizable art style. Part of the pop art movement, the pieces are identifiable by bold lines, bright colors, and variegating patterns. These pieces are very expressive, with thick and deliberate line work. |
Planning
I decided that the lines were too thin and didn't resemble my inspiration, so I did the line art in a thicker pen. I decided that the background crowd looked sparse, so I added more figures in. The scene looks more lively now. Too much detail in the lines would make the piece harder to read after it had been colored, since it would be filled with busy patterns. |
Critique
McPride by me (left), French Girl Sweet Friends by Romero Britto (middle), and Night Out by Romero Britto (right)
similarities
-Both pieces use bright, attention grabbing colors, straying from dull tones of realism and embracing expressive hues.
-Both make use of many patterns throughout the piece, the patterns add intriguing texture to the pieces, this make them more recognizable, and stand out from other artists work.
-My piece and Britto's are very expressive, there is clear emotion to each piece, movement is especially present in McPride, with the characters walking and Night Out, with the characters dancing.
differences
-Britto's work is mostly made up of stiff, geometrical shapes while my piece is more loose and casual.
-My work is more complex, while Britto's is more minimal. My piece features more characters and more action.
-Britto's work is more abstract in colors and shapes, while my piece has more realistic shapes and colors.

Reflection
I'm satisfied by the work I did on this piece. It is filled with detailed line work and bright colors. The use of patterns throughout makes it feel very unique. Like most pop art pieces, it has a message, and it's one I care deeply about. If I were to change anything, I would include more patterns to push the stylized look.
ACT Connection
1.) Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork:
My inspiration artist is Romero Britto. He makes pop art in a very recognizable style, with simple, geometrical shapes, bright colors, and inclusion of many different patterns. His work is reminiscent of a revitalization of abstract art.
2.) What is the overall approach ( point of view ) the author ( from your research ) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
Everyone is capable of creating art, what sets you apart?
3.) What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
I like the pop art style, especially Romero Britto's use of pattern in his pieces, it's not something I would have come up with on my own but now I may try it again in the future.
4.) What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
What if corporations were authentically queer instead of pandering shamelessly for more profit? This I explored in my piece.
5.) What kind of inferences ( conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning ) did you make while reading your research?
Color can do so much for a piece, bright and dull, dark and light, there are so many combinations that can be made.
